System Shutdown Prank

Have you seen this before?

Familiar huh? For newer generations of XP users ( those who starts using XP after SP2 was released ), there are a very rare chance you’ll meet up with a worm known as BLASTER. For older generation such as me, I’ve seen this prompt once too many time.

For today, although April Fools day is over, I’ll teach you a certain PC prank that you can make using the System Shutdown command. It’s really cool and quite harmless. Expect for whom who does not know how to shut it off, then it’s a little harmful.

The Steps:

Right click on your desktop, choose new then create a new shortcut.

When the shortcut prompt come out, type ( or copy and paste ) the input stated below.

%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 60 -c "TYPE YOUR MESSAGE"

Modifying the input stated above is plain simple. The one is RED is the time duration in seconds while the one in GREEN… well, that’s where you type your message.

For this example, let’s use:

You've just open IE on my PC! What the heck are you doing!
Use FireFox! Support the flaming wolf!.

…as the system shutdown message.

Click Next and type in Internet Explorer.
Once you’re done, click Finish.

A picture-less new icon will now be available on your desktop.
But don’t click it yet! I have not teach you how to terminate the system shutdown prompt!

We need to change the icon first. So you right click on the newly created icon and choose Properties. At the bottom of the properties window, click on Change Icon. Browse your way to the Program Files folder and into the Internet Explorer folder.

Double click on the Internet Explorer file and it will bring you to this picture above. Choose the Internet Explorer icon and click OK.
Close the properties box and you’re done.

Testing it out.
I’ll bet you’re fingers are itching to double click on it right. Well, just take note of this final tip:

To close the system shutdown prompt, you have to go to START, then RUN, type:

shutdown -a

…and click OK. Simple right. Just remember it by hard.

The last time I teach someone about this, he blame me for loosing his unsaved work.
When I asked him what did he type in the Run command, he said “Shutup -a”….. lame!
